Prostate cancer statistics

Prostate cancer statistics in europe:

Ferlay et al. 2007 Ann Oncology:

  • Prostate cancer is now the most frequent cancer diagnosed in men (345 900, 20.3% of the total 1489 700)
  • Cancer deaths (thousands) and percentage of total cancer deaths in 2006: 87.4 ( 9 perc of all cancers but nonmelanoma skin 952.4)

Prostate cancer statistics in the US:

Jermal et al.:

  • 218,890 cases in 2007
  • One out of ten male cancer cases is PCa

Prostate cancer statistics in the NL:

  • 20 perc of all male cancer cases were prostate cancer.
  • 87 out of 100.000 men were diagnosed with PCa in 2000 (leeftijd gestandaardiseerde incidentiecijfer)
  • In total 6.900 were diagnosed in 2000

New update from the cbs: http://www.cbs.nl/nl-NL/menu/themas/gezondheid-welzijn/publicaties/artikelen/archief/2009/2009-2687-wm.htm

In 2008 cancer was death cause number one, for the first time above the frequency of heart and vein deseases. This is caused by the fact that cancer rates are decreasing less than for heart and vein. The increasing incidence rates of prostate cancer is correlated to the aging dutch population.
